FALL/WINTER Magazine

Elephants. I dunno why, but elephants have always been my favorite animals. I have an old school picture to prove it — sort of.
In grade one I had this grey elephant hoodie with floppy ears and a tiny trunk that wiggled over me head.
But that’s not what you see in the pic.
They wouldn’t let me wear the hood up, so all you see is me bawling my eyes out trying to keep a straight face….
….Un éléphant qui se balançait
sur une toile d'araignée….
I guess you could say I’m obsessed. So I went to this Congo networking website… and chatted up a couple of guys. (I know it sounds crazy!) One them lives in Montreal but *supposedly* grew up near the Okapi reserve. When he was a kid, he *allegedly* had friendly run-ins with a small elephant family. Ok, I think the part about him riding the wild baby elephant is total b.s., but some of what he told me is possible. Besides, I sort of let him think that I visited the Congo as a part of the Peace Corps, so we’re even.
Anyway, here I am. The real secret: he’s supposed to meet me here in half an hour. And I have no idea what to expect….
Why these bleachers? For one, I’m not completely nuts: there’s people walking by here all the time. Why at sundown? Well, maybe it’s kooky, but I guess I’m a romantic at heart.
