JUNE MOON / FOREVER INTERVIEW
|
When I first heard Flower Tattoo, the latest Mind Bath track featuring Forever, I closed my blinds and danced alone in my bedroom. When was the last time you let go of your inhibitions? Montreal pop musician, Forever, otherwise known as June Moon, makes motivational letting go music. High powered club beats combined with sultry, sensual vocals, the energy in Forever is contagious. Directing her own music videos, offering public breathing exercises, and an expert on Astrology, June is a high-functioning spiritual wanderer. I talked to June about striking a balance in her career and personal life.
What’s your astrological chart and how does it inform your day to day life? Virgo rising, Sun and Mercury in Gemini, Moon and Mars in Cancer, Venus in Taurus meaning my day to day is totally all over the place. I have a lot of 10th house activity, so my life is my career. have Jupiter in Aries in the 8th house so I have psychic abilities I get these flashes on the regular.
Can you tell me a bit about your breathing exercises? Breathing exercises are a beautiful, powerful vehicle for healing. I’ve been having panic attacks for a few years now, it can be terrifying especially when I’m alone, but it’s very cool how the panic leads me to my breath. Working with my breath in the form of certain exercises is helping me to change my thought patterns, and facilitating the release of a lot of grief and anger. It’s trippy, and magical, and kinda teaching me to be my own teacher.
What are some other ways you strive for inner balance? The best thing I’ve ever done for myself is find a home. I’ve been transient for most of my life, and I finally put my name on a lease. I’ve sacrificed so much for my art, and I really neglected how deeply I needed a room of my own. Everything is different now that I have this security in my life. An exhaustive, yet integral pilgrimage of learning how to provide for myself. Also, anything that gets me out of my head and into my body, like dancing, and stretching, or even just walking around. I can spin out so fast, and get so far out into my own mind, so I use my body to get grounded.
Your lyrics and online persona are sexual and hyper-feminine. Can you talk about the importance of harnessing our feminine energy? I feel everything so deeply, if I didn’t harness my feminine energy I would explode and maybe hurt myself, maybe hurt others. My sexuality is a very profound expression of my transformation into the person, and artist I am meant to be. It’s been like a calling, since day one of Forever, I’ve always been working inside this container of my own sensuality. I believe in the value of harnessing feminine energy in general because that energy teaches unconditional loving. I believe in the value of harnessing feminine and masculine energy cause that’s synthesis and integration, and that’s hot.
Michael Brock seems like the yang to your yin. What is that collaborative friendship like? It’s seductive in that it’s ever new. The bond is a very sacred solidarity. It was love at first sight for me. He’s seen me at my absolute worst when I’ve been a depressed piece of shit sabotaging my entire life, and he’s seen me build my life back together brick by fucking brick. We’ve been through so much together already, and through it all we make art side by side. It’s a Gemini Scorpio match made in heaven. Hey Michael! I love you!
Improvisation is a big part of your artistic process. What are the challenges/benefits of handing over control to intuition? Intuition is a force guiding me, keeping me in alignment. When I ignore it, I start creating blockages in my life, and in my art. Improvisation is my favourite tool to use when approaching my work. I wake up every day and try and make something out of nothing, grabbing thoughts from the air. That spirit of improvisation reflects the respect, and devotion I have for my muse. I am but a vessel for creation.
How do you assert your agency while maintaining zen? I’m still figuring this out. I definitely have to go with the flow because of my energy, but I’m constantly working on a million things as I float around because my mind never stops. Embodying that assertive agency while maintaining zen is literally my ideal vibe. I’ve got that Gemini multi-tasking going on so I’m doing this, I’m doing that, I’m over here, I’m over there, but that chaos is my zone, it’s what keeps me in my element.
How do you balance mental health/ self care with the pressures of being a rising pop-star? There are so many variables I will never be able to predict or control, so I surrender to the unknown, and trust in the Universe. This blind faith relieves a lot of pressure, cause I understand I don’t have the foresight to see how things are unfolding. Other than that I cook a lot, and eat a lot, I write every day, and I try my absolute best to be an open minded loving human.
What does vitality mean to you? Close to the flame.
I know you have a flip phone, also the name of your monthly radio show “Flip Phone Forever.” Do you long to be “off the grid”? I like both. I need both. I like to be in the center of everything that’s happening, and I like to be simply alone in the Universe. I like leaving wifi, and taking breaks from the grid. It heightens my senses. I see things. |
